Gary's Rod Building Classes
Learn to build your own custom fishing rods from the ground up.
For example, learn to build a 24" ice fishing rod, a 6'6" light spinning rod or 6'6" medium light casting rod, or several models of musky rods rated for extra heavy action. We also offer fly rod classes or we can customize a class especially for you.
All rods will be constructed using only the highest quality components:
- High-end graphic blanks that are extremely light-weight and sensitive. I personally designed these blanks and have them specially manufactured for my company.
- Titanium oxide cushionless guides which can be used with any fusion line and will not wear.
- Handle and fore grip constructed using only the highest quality cork.
- Reel seats are cushioned graphite with self-aligning hoods.
In each class you will find the spine on the rod blank, fit the handle, reel seat and fore grip to the rod blank and glue them on. You will then properly space the guides on the rod blank and hand wrap each with thread. Completed fishing rods will be monogrammed with the builder's name.
After the class, rods will be taken to my shop in Anoka for gluing. Finished rods will be returned to the school or business where you took your class for pick-up. Class participants are welcome to visit the shop and glue their own rods. I also have classes available at my shop.
Course fees vary from $25 to $40 depending on the class and location. Material fees vary, some examples are:
- Musky Rod Kit - 7'6" kits are $100 plus tax
- 8'6" kits are $135 plus tax
- Spinning Rod or Casting Rod Kits - $75 plus tax
- Ice Fishing Rod Kit - $25 plus tax
Completed rods, depending on craftsmanship, can be valued in excess of $300.
